What an AMAZING Weekend

For the May Long weekend, J and I decided to pack up my little mazda and head off camping for the weekend. My family was super worried because they figured me to be too much of a city girl BUT I had such a blast - it was absolutely incredible. Turns out I'm a little bit more outdoors-y then I thought!

We stayed at Fish Lake, just West of Nordegg. It was absolutely beautiful. Our site actually backed onto Mud Lake, and since we were on the last loop at the very end, it was very quiet and peaceful, with very little traffic.

I found out Justin is a regular survivor man. He is so smart and innovative when it comes to the outdoors that I would not want to have spent my time out there with anybody else. He refused to use anything that would not constitute "real" camping (this includes roasting sticks - yes, we had to make our own). He also gave me a "survivor" challenge which forced me to make a campfire with no fire starters - just a lighter and whatever I could find in the trees around out site. He was even able to start a fire using just a flint and no lighter - wtf!

We got there at around 8:00pm on Friday night and began to set up, but holy crap was it ever cold. We got a fire going and the tent and tarp up and then sat around the fire and cooked some smokies for dinner. That night it was around -7 and it started snowing. Luckily, we had a heater that we were able to set up in the tent but we also had to wear 10 layers of clothes just to stay warm.

Mud Lake
The next day, we went for a hike around Mud Lake. It started out absolutely beautiful until we decided to leave the trail and continue walking around the lake. BAD IDEA. We quickly found out why it was called "Mud Lake"... the water was knee deep (thigh-high on me) and it was all muddy like quicksand on the bottom. When we finally got back to the campsite we were soaked and filthy, and my Uggs were ruined. :(

Fish Lake
Afterwards we went down to Fish Lake to see if J would have any luck catching anything - no dice. He fished for a few hours while I sat on the dock and read my book. We went back and had a five star dinner - steak and potatoes with cheese toast and some beers.

Crescent Falls
On Sunday we went to Crescent Falls, which was absolutely beautiful. We hiked down to the bottom of the canyon, to the base of the first waterfall, and took some pictures. On the side of the river were two Inukshuks made from the rocks. Then we went to Goldeye Lake to test Justin's luck at fishing one last time, and he actually caught quite a few little fish. We spent the evening having beers (and in my case an entire bottle of wine) with the couple who was camping across from us.

We were sad to leave on Monday afternoon but knew that we would definitely go back there again, and I look forward to all the camping we'll get to experience in the future.
